The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after colliding with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean. The ship was on its maiden voyage from Southampton, UK, to New York City, USA, and was considered to be the largest and most luxurious ship of its time.
The collision occurred at around 11:40 PM, on April 14, when the ship struck an iceberg on its starboard (right) side. The impact caused serious damage to the ship's hull, creating a series of openings along the side of the ship that allowed water to flood into the lower decks. The Titanic's watertight compartments were designed to contain any water that entered the ship, but the damage was too extensive, and water overflowed from one compartment to the next.
As the water flooded into the lower decks, the Titanic began to list (tilt) to the right, and the crew worked to evacuate the passengers into lifeboats. However, there were not enough lifeboats for everyone on board, and many passengers were unable to escape the sinking ship. The Titanic ultimately sank at 2:20 AM on April 15, taking more than 1,500 lives with it.
The sinking of the Titanic was a major disaster and prompted changes in maritime safety regulations, including the requirement for ships to carry enough lifeboats for all passengers and crew, as well as improved wireless communication and navigation equipment.
